San Vicente de la Barquera, Asturias, Spain

San Vicente de la Barquera is a beautiful and historic fishing village that now sees an increasing number of tourists as Asturias gains in visitor popularity.

Located on the northern coast of Spain, San Vicente de la Barquera benefits from a perfect location and its 5,000 hectare “Oyambre” Nature Park takes in sea facing cliffs, a number of picture perfect beaches, plus open meadows, some salt marshes and all with the backdrop of the stunning Picos de Europa mountain range (a comparatively short drive a way).

This municipality really is one of exceptional natural beauty where a mix of greenery, mountains, hills and beaches combine with the attractive town of San Vicente de la Barquera which itself projects out into the ocean.

The town of San Vicente de la Barquera

The town is a perfect base from which to explore the coastal and mountainous aspects of eastern Asturias and, aside from a number of hotels and restaurants, has some major sightseeing attractions of its own.

With a recorded history dating back over one thousand years, San Vicente de la Barquera has the ruins of a castle and a rtified wall from the eighth century. The town’s oldest church, Nuestra Senora de los Angeles, was constructed over three centuries between the thirteenth and sixteenth millennia and a fifteenth century convent (San Luis) also adds to the historic wealth of this fishing town.

If you want more, then there is a mansion house built over 400 years ago and parts of the original fishing port still remain. But the town’s main appeal is the sum of its parts with the predominantly white building facades, the sea front and a meandering estuary with a bridge that provides San Vicente de la Barquera with most of the features that the typical visitor to Asturias will be on the look-out for.

The coastal zone surrounding San Vicente de la Barquera has many good beaches, all with EU blue flags, and you will find a mix of open sandy beaches and hidden bay areas allowing you privacy if that is your preference.
